My work includes sculptural containers and tiles, the angular forms evoking books, pages or walls. I make tile books too, and series of functional pieces for food. I mark my surfaces with tools, ceramic pencils, slips, glazes and iron toner prints. Some pieces are combined with printed, handmade paper.
Imagery based on words and maps has long been central to my work, expressing messages that may be variously interpreted or understood depending on context, cultural, physical or otherwise. I use maps as diagrams of both certainty and doubt, pointing to where we think we are and to the biases, hopes and fears underlying that assumption. I may intersperse them with scribbles, texts and graffiti, often faded and fragmentary, palimpsests of color, shape and meaning attacked by time.
